Who was Sher Ali Khan Afridi?

Sher Ali Khan Afridi was an Indian freedom fighter who dedicated his entire life to contributing to India's independence. Sher Ali Khan was a prisoner in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 1872 who was sentenced to the terrible punishment of black water for murder. He assassinated the Viceroy of India, Lord Mayo, on February 8, 1872. And he is best known for his deliberate murder of Mayo due to the punishment of Kala Pani.

Sher Ali Khan Afridi was born in the Tirah Valley of the Khyber Agency of present-day Pakistan. He was a member of the Afridi tribe, a Pashtun tribe native to the region. Sher Ali served as a soldier in the British colonial army during the rebellion of 1857. But as the rebellion ended, Sher Ali Khan was sentenced for the murder of one of his relatives. Later, his punishment was changed to the black water punishment of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In 1872, Sher Ali was working as a prisoner orderly for Rennell Taylor, Commissioner of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On February 8, 1872, Lord Mayo visited the islands and was accompanied by Taylor. Sher Ali killed Lord Mayo with a dagger. He was captured and hanged on March 12, 1873.

First he won the hearts of the British with his cunning, and then one day he ended Mayo's game:

Mayo's visit to the depot on February 8, 1872, proved to be a turning point for him. Sher Ali Khan Afridi used to think in his mind during the punishment of Kala Pani what he should do for the freedom of India. Then he made a plan.

His plan was that, first of all, he would erase his criminal image from the minds of the British. And under this plan, he left his anger towards the British and gradually won the hearts of all the British officers in the jail. And seeing this changed behavior of Sher Ali, he got the job of barber in jail. After getting the job, he started cutting everyone's hair in the jail, and he used to tell the Indian prisoners serving their sentences in that jail that he was going to do a big feat.

Sher Ali's wait ended on February 8, 1872, when the Governor General of India, Loaded Mayo, visited the Andaman prison on a prison visit. And Mayo's visit to the jail was a golden opportunity for Sher Ali. Because there were strict security arrangements in the jail on February 8th. But Sher Ali, who had already won the hearts of the British, started serving mayo to the British. The jail security personnel did not see any threat from Sher Ali.

At last, it was evening. It got a little dark. Sher Ali took out a hair-cutting knife hidden in his clothes, and before the soldiers engaged in security could understand anything, Sher Ali had murdered Lord Mayo. And because of this murder, Sher Ali Khan Afridi was given a death sentence on February 27, 1872.
