The love story of Hadi Rani and Ratan Singh began between Maharana Raj Singh I of Mewar and Princess Charumati of Rupangarh (present-day Kishangarh), born in the Sisodia dynasty. Born in 1629, Raj Singh was the eldest son of Jagat Singh, the Maharana of Mewar State. At that time, the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb wanted to marry the princess of Rupangarh. But the princess did not approve of this. Because she had already accepted Maharana Raj Singh as her husband.
The princess sent a proposal of marriage to Rajsingh through a letter; he wrote in the letter that "Sisodia Kulbhushan, Kshatriya Shiromani Maharana Rajsingh's greetings to the princess of Rupangarh. Maharaj should know that Mughal Aurangzeb has sent me a decree of marriage." You are the hero of the Kshatriyas in the present time; tell me, should the daughter of this pious clan marry that sinner? Should the swan go with the vulture?
King! I pray for my marriage. It is up to you to accept or reject me, but I have accepted you as my husband. Now the burden of my protection is on you. If you don't help me in time, I will have to commit suicide. Now yours...."
When the Rajpurohit of Roopangarh finished reading the letter in the Raj Sabha of Mewar, don't know how hundreds of swords tied around the waists of the councilors started thundering.
Maharaj Raj Singh had now become an adult. Neither the age nor the desire for marriage were left, but it was not possible to refuse the princess's request. It was a gathering of Rajputs who considered every weak person's pain their own. It was an assembly of Kshatriyas who had sacrificed their heads hundreds of times for their prestige. Then how was it possible to refuse this surrendering request from a Kshatriya girl? But marriage...? Maharana got worried.
The Maharana was silent, but the Raj Sabha was vocal. Everyone said in a collective voice, "Your Majesty, the princess's reputation has to be protected! Otherwise, this Raj Sabha will always stand like criminal cowards in front of the future. We will have to march towards Rupangarh."।
The Maharana thought for a while and said, "We respect the sentiments of the councillors. It is our duty to protect the princess, and we will not back down from our duty. Coming forward to protect the princess means fighting Aurangzeb." Do it, so a message should be sent to all the Sardars that they should get ready for war; we will march towards Rupangarh tomorrow itself.
Maharana left for Rupangarh, and here Aurangzeb's army left for Udaipur. War was now inevitable.
When the message of Maharana reached Sardar Ratan Singh Chundawat of Salumbar, Ratan Singh was playing entertaining games with the newly married wife, sitting among the women of the house after marriage. It had only been six days since their marriage. When he read the Maharana's message, he shuddered. He understood very well that war with Aurangzeb meant self-sacrifice. The game stopped, and the women went to their respective rooms. The beautiful face of the wife started dancing in front of Sardar Ratan Singh's eyes. His wife was the daughter of Hada Sardars of Bundi, the owner of wonderful beauty.
Beautiful hair like the tangled rays of the sun hidden in the clouds in the morning, shining forehead like the full moon, cheeks like earthen pots filled with curd, eyes like two big drops of water standing on the leaves of Arui, and their Alha standing for protection, and Udal's eyebrows like two swords, two lips wrapped like the streams of Ganga-Yamuna hugging in Prayagraj, neck like a raw jug playing in the hands of a potter on a dancing wheel... God has made Hadi Rani like a complete person with faith. How could Sardar forget them and go to war?
Ratan Singh asked the messenger to rest and came to his wife's room. While narrating Maharana's message to Hadi Rani, who had come as a bride a week ago, Ratan Singh used to tremble again and again, but the glow on the queen's face kept increasing. Hearing the full message, the sixteen-year-old Hada princess said, “The most auspicious day for a Kshatrani is when she applies tilak on her husband's forehead with her own hands and sends him to the battlefield. I am lucky that within a week of marriage, I am getting this wonderful opportunity. Prepare to go, sir! I will be here praying for your victory and awaiting your return."
Ratan Singh said in sad words, "I don't want to leave you. You will be missed even on the battlefield! I wonder how you will live without me."
The queen's head was shining with pride. Said, "Don't worry about me, Lord! Look at your duty. I will live like other warriors' wives. And then it is a matter of how many days after the war you will be with me again!"
Ratan Singh did not give any answers. They started preparing to give instructions to their troops and go to war. The next morning, at the time of departure, when the queen applied Tilak to him, Ratan Singh spontaneously embraced his wife. Both smiled, then Ratan Singh left.
Third day of battle, Ratan Singh Letter To Hadi Rani:
On the third day, a messenger from the battlefield reached Salumber with Ratan Singh's letter. The letter was for Hadi Rani. wrote-
"Today our army is fully prepared for war. It is possible to fight with Aurangzeb's army on the second or third day. The Maharana has gone to Rupangarh, so in his absence, it is our responsibility to protect the state. Your face does not disappear from my eyes, even for a moment. When I was close to you, I could not say; now that I am away from you, I cannot live without saying. I love you very much. Yours, Sardar Ratan Singh Chundawat."
The queen smiled after reading the letter. Hearing someone say "I love you so much" to yourself is more addictive than cannabis. The queen picked up the paper to answer and simply wrote:
"Yours and only yours..."
2nd letter of Ratan Singh to Hadi Rani:
The letter carrier went away with the answer. Two days later, the letter carrier again brought a letter for the queen. This time Ratan Singh wrote:
"Your letter today has made me swoon. It seems as if I am with you. Our sword is waiting for the heads of the Mughal soldiers. Tomorrow is the marriage of the princess Chaarumati with the Maharana. Aurangzeb's army will also reach it tomorrow. Aurangzeb is angry, so the war will be terrible. I am not concerned about myself; only your concern bothers me.
3rd Letter to Hadi Rani ( Sahal Kanwar ):
The queen read the letter but could not smile. Today, he didn't even send any replies. The postman returned. The next day, in the evening, the letter carrier again appeared with the letter. The queen sadly opened the letter. wrote:
"Aurangzeb's army has arrived. The war will start in the morning itself. Whether I will return or not, destiny knows now. Now I may not get a chance to write letters, so today I say again, I have done most of the work in my life. I have loved only you. I wonder what would happen to you if I died in battle. Let me ask one thing: if I am no more, will you forget me? Yours, Ratan Singh."
Hada Rani became serious. She understood that Ratan Singh was getting distracted from his duty by getting trapped in her fascination. He decided on his duty in a moment. He wrote a letter to Sardar Ratan Singh, then called the letter carrier to him. When the letter carrier saw the face of the queen, he trembled. All the blood of the body had come on the queen's face, and the hair was flying in the wind as if a storm was going on. Durga looked like a sixteen-year-old girl. He said to the courier in a serious voice, "Will you do me a favor, brother?"
The hands of the letter carrier joined spontaneously. Said, "Order sister."
"Convey this letter and one item of mine to Sardar."
The courier nodded his head. The queen went ahead and pulled the sword from his waist with one stroke and ran the whole hand on his neck. Hadi Rani's head was cut off and fell away. The courier screamed in fear, his hair standing on end.
Final reply of Hadi Rani to Ratan Singh:
The next day, the letter carrier reached Ratan Singh directly on the battlefield and gave Hadi Rani's bundle. Ratan Singh opened the wooden box with a smile, but as soon as he opened it, he started crying. The cut head of the queen was kept in the box. Sardar looked at the letter carrier with burning eyes, then extended the letter from the queen towards him. Ratan Singh opened the letter and saw it. wrote:
"Salutations at the feet of Sardar Ratan Singh, his queen. You were probably forgetting that I am your wife, not your lover. We had taken the holy fire around as witnesses, and that's why I am not only for this life but also for the next seven births. Till then, I am yours and only yours. My concern was taking you away from your duty, so I am going away from you myself. I will sit there in heaven and wait for you. Your first duty is to protect the honor of the princess of Rupangarh; after that, we shall meet here. Should I say one thing, Sardar? I have also loved you very much. As much as no one would have done."
Tears started flowing from Ratan Singh's eyes. He kept on suffering for some time, and then don't know why he smiled. His head had become high, and his chest had become broad. After that, as if time had stopped, he was looking at the edge of Ratan Singh's sword. The Rajput army was victorious in the war that lasted for three days, and the sword of Sardar Ratan Singh drank the most blood in this war. He fought until his last breath. He used to smile whenever the enemy's weapons touched his body. One by one, his limbs were cut off, and in the end, he became immortal.
The princess of Rupnagar landed in Udaipur in full glory as the little queen of Mewar. Rajput may have lost the battle many times, but it never lost its prestige. The fame of the princess also became immortal.
Along with the love story of Maharana Raj Singh and Princess Charumati, the love story of Hadi Rani and Ratan Singh also became immortal. And today, Hadi Rani is considered a symbol of courage and sacrifice across the country. Who had taken such a courageous step at the age of just 16.
Why did Hadi Rani cut off her head?
Hadi Rani's real name was Sahal Kanwar. To inspire her husband, Chundawat Sardar Ratan Singh, she beheaded him and sent him to the battlefield. Since Ratan Singh was completely infatuated with his 16-year-old newlywed wife, Hadi Rani sacrificed her head to remind him of his duty. Sahal Kanwar is called Hadi Rani, as she was the daughter of Hada Chauhan Rajput. Hadi Rani became immortal in history because of her sacrifice.
