36 persons lost their lives as a result of the violence, including 18 on the election day. There were numerous instances of attacks on election officials as well as looting of ballot boxes and ballot paper destruction. The Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces at every voting location since the violence was so pervasive.

Several political parties and civil society organizations condemned the violence. While the BJP accused the TMC of resorting to violence to crush the opposition, the TMC claimed that the BJP was responsible for the violence. The State Election Commission (SEC) also faced criticism for failing to contain the violence.

The West Bengal Panchayat Election 2023:

The election was marred by violence and rigging. At least 37 people were killed in the violence and there were widespread allegations of ballot stuffing and intimidation. The State Election Commission (SEC) had to deploy central forces to control the violence.

Mamta Banerjee is expected to benefit greatly from TMC's victory before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. TMC was accused of rigging the election, but BJP refused to accept the results. Regarding the violence in this election, some BJP workers said, 'Ms. Mamata Banerjee is playing a dangerous game of Ballot Boxes Heist in West Bengal.'  The party has filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court to declare the results invalid.
